Retirement works differently for different people.
Some San Diego Gas & Electric employees count down to their last day, and others keep working because they enjoy the structure, the people, or the paycheck, and either path can work out once you have looked honestly at your own numbers and goals.
A short exercise helps: write down what you would do with your time, then compare that against what you can afford, and see where the two pictures line up before you set a date.
Full retirement age for Social Security is 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later, and claiming at the earliest age, 62, permanently reduces that same benefit to about 70% of the full amount.
Waiting past full retirement age adds delayed retirement credits of 8% a year, up to age 70, so a benefit claimed at 70 can reach about 124% of the full retirement age amount.
Social Security and SSI payments rose 2.8% for 2026.
If you claim before full retirement age and keep working, Social Security withholds $1 in benefits for every $2 you earn above $24,480 in 2026, though withheld amounts get added back into your benefit once you reach full retirement age.
Retirement plans generally fall into a few families: a defined benefit, or pension, plan promises a monthly amount based on pay and years of service; a defined contribution plan, like a 401(k), depends on what you and San Diego Gas & Electric put in and how it performs; a cash balance plan blends features of both and is usually shown as an account balance you can take as a lump sum or convert into income.
Knowing which type San Diego Gas & Electric offers changes how you should think about a lump sum versus annuity decision, which is worth confirming before you model your own numbers.
If you retire before Medicare eligibility, you need a bridge: COBRA, a marketplace plan, a spouse's plan, or retiree coverage through San Diego Gas & Electric, and the monthly cost of that bridge belongs in your retirement budget from day one.
Medicare eligibility generally begins at 65, and your Initial Enrollment Period runs 7 months: it starts 3 months before your birthday month and ends 3 months after it.
If you keep working past 65 with health coverage through a current job (yours or a spouse's), you can generally delay Part B without a late penalty until 8 months after that job coverage ends; COBRA and retiree coverage do not count for this purpose.
The standard Medicare Part B premium for 2026 is $202.90 a month, with an annual deductible of $283.
Add a Medigap policy, a Part D drug plan, or Medicare Advantage premiums, and your real monthly health care cost in retirement is usually higher than the Part B number by itself.
In 2026, you can put up to $24,500 into a 401(k), 403(b), or governmental 457 plan, plus a catch-up of $8,000 if you are 50 or older, or $11,250 if you turn 60 through 63 during the year.
The 2026 IRA contribution limit is $7,500, with a $1,100 catch-up for savers 50 and older.
Required minimum distributions generally must start for the year you turn 73 if you were born from 1951 through 1959, or 75 if you were born in 1960 or later, whether the money sits in a traditional IRA or a plan like a 401(k).
Skipping an RMD can trigger a 25% excise tax on the amount you should have taken, cut to 10% if you correct the mistake within roughly two years.
Every one of these questions eventually comes back to the specifics of San Diego Gas & Electric's own plans, which is where a closer look makes the most difference.
San Diego Gas & Electric employees can look at what its own retirement plans actually report before picking a target date. San Diego Gas & Electric's pension is a cash balance plan, a separate plan from Sempra's own, that credits benefits on a career-average-earnings basis, not a final-average-pay formula. In its 2024 Form 5500, the plan covered 6,335 participants, including 4,612 active employees, held $842 million in net assets, and was 104.60% funded against its funding target. San Diego Gas & Electric's Savings Plan, its 401(k), covered 5,957 participants in its 2025 Form 5500, with $2.23 billion in net assets and $21.5 million in company contributions for the year. Knowing which plan applies, and whether it is still open to new accruals, is worth confirming before estimating a retirement income number.
San Diego Gas & Electric runs a separate retiree group health and welfare program, which covered 2,230 participants in its 2024 Form 5500, including 2,045 retirees or separated workers already receiving benefits and 185 entitled to future coverage. Its active-employee health and welfare program covered 4,533 active participants in the same 2024 filing, down from 4,656 at the start of the year. Anyone planning to retire before 65 can ask San Diego Gas & Electric's benefits office how retiree coverage compares with COBRA or a marketplace plan on monthly cost.
